Visual artist Helene Høm (born 1972) experiments between the understandable and abstraction in a working process, where motifs, colors and ornaments are mixed ind order to let subtle impressions and themes emerge - often with elements of mystery. With colouristic sensitivity, she uses nature and the sea around Bornholm to explore basic existential conditions of contemporary humanity.

Helene Høm acquired a physical and performative approach to visual arts at the state academy Norwegian Theatre Academy in 2001-2004 (BA). Methods and expressions from visual art, architecture and installation art were used in her work with performance and theatre. As part of this, she started painting during her studies, with the Swedish artist Hans-Ove Granath as professor and mentor. Her graduation solo project consisted of a series of paintings created from a theatre script.

After almost 20 years of working mainly with visual performing arts, she immersed herself exclusively in painting in the years 2018-2024 and established herself as a visual artist. Today, she works with several medias and forms of expression; object/sculpture, painting, performance, costume, installation, sound, video and text. Improvised choreography is a basic starting point for any artistic process in her studio:

"It's about presence. I have to create from a point that is not mental, but rather intuitive, sensory and investigative."

Helene Høm is the fifth generation in a Bornholm artist family, that goes back to Hjorths Keramik in Rønne and the ”Bornholm Painters”.
